GAIAMUN 21 organised by CIC

The International Club of the Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos organised, in partnership with the Gaia City Council, the ‘GaiaMUN’, which was adapted, for the second time, to the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It involved 116 students from eight schools (American School of Lisbon, Almeida Garrett Secondary School, Gaia Nascente Secondary School, Professional School Art and Sports, Professional School of Infante, Colégio Internato Claret, Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos and Colégio de Gaia), who represented countries and international organisations in a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly.

The debate took place on the ZOOM platform, where different topics were actively discussed.

The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. José Pedrosa, pedagogical director of the Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos, who welcomed GaiaMUN, highlighting its importance as a place to discuss the problems of today and tomorrow. Next, the Gaia City Councillor for Youth, Dr. Elísio Pinto, affirmed the importance of democracy and a more sustainable world, led by today’s young people, in whom he placed his hope. Finally, the director of GAIAMUN, Professor M.ª Emília Macedo, began by recalling the first conference organised at the Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos in 2001 under the name of CICMUN and the evolution of the event until today, calling on the young people present to be active and participative citizens and fair and impartial leaders.

We pray that these kinds of dialogues that help to build will continue to be encouraged and we join in the wish that the next edition, in 2022, can already be face-to-face.
