Commentary for Sunday: II of Easter

April 12, 2020. 2nd Sunday of Easter. John 20, 19-31

Sunday. First day of the week. The group of believers is gathered, and the newly risen Jesus is present in their midst. He gives them his peace, communicates his Spirit to them, and sends them forth as the Father sent him, with power to forgive. They are filled with joy and tell others that they have seen the Lord. One is not present and does not believe it. He needs to see and touch in order to believe.
Today is Sunday, the day of the Lord. Because of the special circumstances we are living through, today we will not be able to meet with others who believe and hope the same as I do. We will have to be content with following the Eucharist through the various means of communication at our disposal. But it is not only the physical presence that unites us, but our common faith. And it is our faith that realizes the presence of the Risen Lord in our lives. (When two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst). ) He will give us peace, His Spirit and the ability to forgive. And He will send us out into the world.
Am I aware of what happens, of what I celebrate, when I celebrate Sunday Mass? do I need, like St Thomas, other tangible signs? is the faith of the community, of the group of believers, a support for my doubts?
May the presence of the Risen Lord of Life boost our faith and fill us with hope.
