Commentary for Sunday: 30th May

Matthew 28, 16-20:

Sunday, May 30th, 2021 (Holy Trinity)

After Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded the apostles to go to Galilee, where they would see him. When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe what I have commanded you”. And in the power of the Spirit they went about doing what Jesus commanded them. But not everywhere was his message accepted.

There are many people who say they are atheists or agnostics. And if they give any explanation we can intuit that it is because they have been given an image of God that does not correspond to that of the Gospel. The God of theoretical definitions, made from a human mentality? The God of theology and philosophy, who cannot go beyond what reasoning allows? God is a mystery, and as such, unreachable for reason. But not for the heart.

To understand what love is, you have to be in love. And those who live in love are full of feelings and live in happiness. Others notice it, they don’t need explanations.

The mystery of God is a mystery of love. He loves us because we are his children and he makes himself present in our lives. He is not far away, nor is he the righteous personage that some have portrayed him as. He becomes one like us and gives us a lesson in life, and gives us his Spirit so that we may love as he loves us.

The one who “feels” God in his life does not need definitions, and the one who lives it transmits an image of peace, love and forgiveness.

What image of God are we transmitting?
