Commentary for Sunday: 15th January

John 1, 29-34:

Sunday, 15th January 2023 (2nd OT  A)

In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear John the Baptist’s testimony about Jesus: “I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descending and resting on him, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen him and testified that this is the Son of God”.

A witness is one who testifies, who certifies with his words and actions an event he has experienced.

Today, John the Baptist tells us that he is a witness that Jesus is the Lamb of God, the one who takes away the sin of the world, and that he has seen the Spirit of God upon him.

Our time, our world needs real witnesses, convinced Christians who bear witness to Jesus. If we have known him, if he has had something to do with our lives, we cannot remain silent. There are many who do not know him, who have not yet met him, and are waiting for someone to open their eyes.

Those who have experienced Jesus in some way (and there are so many times he passes beside us!), cannot keep quiet about it. He must be like the Baptist, a witness of God’s love. He must share with others the joy of the good news: this is the Lamb of God, who makes me happy when I live authentically.
