Serving the Word: Lk 9: 51-56

Luke 9, 51-56:
“Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up? But Jesus turned, and rebuked them”.

James and John want to fix things in their own way. After the rejection of the Samaritans to receive Jesus into their town, they want Jesus to act in a violent manner by sending fire from heaven.
But Jesus rebukes them. His way of acting is not violence. Jesus is patient. He knows that there will come a day when he will find yourself with a Samaritan woman and through her the people of Samaria will accept his presence and salvation.
Today, Jesus gives us a lesson in patience and tolerance. Never ask for fire from heaven to punish those who reject you or those who are not of the same outlook or temperament.
Today we start the Missionary Month of October.
