Serving the Word: Lk 1: 57-66.80

WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE

Luke 1, 57-66.80:
“The time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she brought forth a son… John is his name… the hand of the Lord was with him”.

In the liturgy, besides Jesus, we only celebrate two birthdays: that of the Virgin Mary and that of St. John the Baptist.
Today, June 24th, is the feast of the birth of St. John the Baptist.
John was already sanctified in the womb of his mother Elizabeth.
Elizabeth gives birth to a child who must be called John. A child who belongs to the Lord.
John is destined to go on new paths and is chosen for a specific mission: to be the Precursor of the Saviour and to bring a message of love and hope from God: “the Lord is near”. You too are called to give this good news to the whole world.
You too are called to prepare the ways of the Lord so that the Lord will be present in every person, in every event and in every moment of history.
Ask the Lord today that, like John the Baptist, you may always proclaim in word and deed the salvation that Jesus brings us.
We congratulate all those who bear the name of John or Joan.
Good day.
