Serving the Word: 6th January

SATURDAY 6th JANUARY 2024

Matthew 2, 1-12

“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. They went into the house, saw the child with Mary his mother, and fell on their knees and worshipped him; then they opened their coffers and offered gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh”.

The Magi set out on their journey because God has previously set out to meet them and, in them, to meet us: “We have seen his star rising”.

We can only meet God because he has previously sought us, continues to seek us and will seek us continually.

Today God allows himself to be found by the unknown, by those who are not on the list of those who are invited, nor on the registers of those who have all the rights.

The Magi have to leave Herod’s palace, they have to leave the holy city of Jerusalem to follow the star and meet the child on the “peripheries”.

They meet him with Mary, his mother, and prostrate themselves before him on their knees. The Child’s littleness does not prevent them from seeing God in him. On the contrary, this simplicity and littleness is the transparency of God Himself.

This feast of the Manifestation of the Lord is not for those who know a lot and have a lot of power. It is meant for children, for the humble, for all those who set out because they discover a “star”, for all those who go out to the “peripheries”, for all those who expose themselves to the elements and for all those who know how to kneel before the littleness of a God made child.

May the Wise Men find you today and always be small so that they can give you lots of good things.

Good day to you.
