Serving the Word: 1st July

SATURDAY 1st JULY 2023

Matthew 8, 5 -17:

“Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof; it is enough for you to say but the word, and my servant will be made whole”.

The centurion who comes to Jesus today is a pagan, someone who does not belong to the Jewish people.

But he approaches Jesus with enormous faith, with total trust and with great humility.

Jesus recognises and values these qualities and grants him what he asks for. For Jesus makes no distinction of race or people. He looks directly into the heart and knows how to value what is within it.

The centurion teaches us how to live our faith.

We repeat his words every time we take part in the Eucharist before communion: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed”.

Say these words in all their depth if you have not done so before.

Jesus will always renew your hope, strengthen and increase your faith.

Good day to you.
