Commentary for Sunday: XV Ordinary Time

12 July 2020. 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 13, 1-23

This Sunday, Jesus tells us the parable of the sower: He casts the seeds and some of them fall on the road and are eaten by birds; others fall among stones and dry up; others among brambles, which choke them and do not let them grow; and others fall on good soil and they produce fruit. But not all of them equally.
Jesus explains it to the disciples: the seed is the Word of God and we are the soil where it falls. And each one receives it in his own way: do I receive it and then forget it? does it all just remain good intentions? does the surroundings and what will they say have any influence on my life? does it mean any kind of commitment for me?
The Word is a gift that God gives to us, but it is also a commitment, because it needs us to take care of the land, to water it, to remove weeds… It is effective in itself, it bears fruit. But the percentage depends on us.
After explaining the parables, Jesus asked his disciples: “Have you understood this? Hopefully we can say yes, for another beatitude will be fulfilled that Jesus adds to his list: “Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear”.
