Commentary for Sunday: Pentecost

 9 June 2019 (Pentecost)

We all have an image of God. We imagine him with certain characteristics: The Lord, serene and majestic, with a white beard, transmitting peace and goodness…
It is easier to have an image of his Son, as he took a body like ours in Jesus of Nazareth, who went about doing good, who told us that his Father was all love and mercy, who died nailed to a cross and rose from the dead and appeared on different occasions to his friends and those who had faith in Him. He was young, about thirty, and that each one puts on him a face that they like.
And the Holy Spirit? Do I see him only as a white dove that appears on some occasions in the life of Jesus? What do I know about him?
He is the love of God who acted in Mary and made her a mother. That drives Jesus to commit himself to the end, and then raised him from the dead. It is the force that Jesus gives to his friends to be the ones to continue his work in this life. He is the interior impulse that makes us pray to God, Seek for good and peace, and loving others. He is the one who puts us on alert when the spirit of evil attacks us.
We received him in the sacraments. We celebrate him on this Solemnity of Pentecost and we remember him with the words of Saint Luke.
That this Spirit strengthens us and grant us his gifts to be true witnesses of the Risen Christ. Happy Pentecost!
