Commentary for Sunday: 8th January

Matthew 3, 13-17:

Sunday, 8th January 2023 (The Baptism of the Lord)

Christmas is over and we begin a new year. It is a time of good resolutions and wishes. The phrase we have been repeating the most in recent days has been “Happy New Year”. Wishes for others and for ourselves. But how to be happy? What am I willing to do? Someone wrote that happiness is not the goal, but the path. It is reached by what we do and how we do it. It is the satisfaction of a job well done that brings us happiness. On this Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of Jesus. The beginning of his public life, of the realisation of his mission. St. Peter tells us that “he went about doing good and healing those who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him”. After being baptised he is declared the Son of God and anointed with the power of the Spirit. Just like you and me after our baptism. He carries out his mission as announced by the prophet Isaiah, out of peace, humility, justice, love. How am I to bring this to life, if I am a follower of Jesus? Within the family, the community, at work, with friends?

When 2023 ends, will it have been a happy year?
