Commentary for Sunday: 30th July

Matthew 13:44-52:

Sunday, July 30th, 2023 (17th T O A)

“At that time Jesus said to the people, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field; whoever finds it, hides it again and, overjoyed, goes and sells all that he has and buys the field.'”

Jesus continues to speak to us about the Kingdom of God through parables. Today he proposes to us the parable of the treasure hidden in the field and the parable of the pearl of great price. The one who finds the treasure or the pearl and realizes its true value, sells everything to get it.

In both parables the important thing is to realize, to discover the value of what we have found. To be clever and shrewd to realize what we have in front of us. The field and the pearl express the values of the spirit, much more important than all the others, although they may be less perceptible or less satisfactory in the short term. But if we want to get them we must risk, invest (sell everything you have and buy it). In this investment it is Jesus who supports us. That is why we must trust in him and be enthusiastic about these sure values. He who falls in love is ready to leave everything for that love, he is capable of renouncing many other things. Whoever discovers true wisdom, whoever finds the values that Jesus proposes to us, is ready to live the happiness of loving and feeling loved.
