Serving the Word: Mt 9: 14-17

Matthew 9:14-17:
“Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them”.

Jesus does not want a fast that is merely ritualistic.
He doesn’t want a sad fasting nor a fasting just for the sake of fasting.
He doesn’t want a fasting that can even fatten our own religious ego.
The fasting that Jesus wants is a fasting that has repercussions for the benefit of others and that brings me closer to the Father.
It can be very good to deprive ourselves of food. But such deprivation has to be more in solidarity with our brothers and sisters and bring us closer to them.
It is more difficult, but also more effective, to fast from attitudes and situations that block us or we make it difficult for the relationship with others and the relationship with God: jealousy, intolerance, selfishly grabbing, misunderstandings, bitterness… and so many other things that draw us away from our brothers and sisters and our Father.
Fast today from all those things that keep you getting closer to your brothers and sisters and your Father God.
Good day.
