TUESDAY 2nd MARCH 2021
Matthew 23, 1-12:
“Whoever wishes to be first among you will be your servant. He who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted”.
We cannot deny that we all like to be first. We like to be flattered, to be complimented, to be recognised and to be known for what we do.
We like the first places, to be bowed to, to be considered superior.
In short, we seek to be served rather than to serve.
But Jesus turns things upside down and reminds us of our equality as brothers and sisters, of the primacy of service, of knowing how to be humble and to “live on our knees” in order to be closer to people without thinking we are special and superior.
Jesus invites us to be honest, sincere and consistent.
This Lenten season is a good time to meditate on all this advice of Jesus.
Ask yourself if you act consistently, if you behave as you intend, if you ask others to behave in a way that you do not, if you do things because you think you should or if you do them to be seen, if you seek the first place and if you consider yourself to be more of a master than your brother or sister.
Accept your insignificance and avoid pride and arrogance. Let yourself be small.
