Serving the Word: 28th February

MONDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2022

Mark 10, 17-27:

“Jesus looked at him with affection and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell what you have, give the money to the poor, so that you may have treasure in heaven, and then come and follow me’.”

The young man in today’s Gospel who comes to Jesus is a good achiever.

Since he was a little boy he has been keeping all the commandments.

Somehow he wants to gain eternal life by keeping rules and precepts.

That’s why he asks Jesus what he has to do.

But Jesus changes his outlook. He does not tell him what he has to “do” but what he has to “be”.

First there is the “to be” and then comes the “to do”.

Let us make no mistake about the order: first there is the firm, sure and demanding decision to follow Jesus, to want to BE like Him and to follow Him.

If you are clear about this and it is engraved in your heart, you will also do the works that he wants you to do in order to obtain eternal life.

Try to be a disciple of Jesus. Then you will do what Jesus is saying to you.

Good day.
