Serving the Word: 25th July

TUESDAY, JULY 25th, 2023

Matthew 20:20-28:

“Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The disciples do not quite understand either the language or Jesus’ approach. They are like two parallel worlds. As Jesus goes up to Jerusalem, he speaks to his followers of suffering, of failure, of death on the cross and also of fullness of life. Jesus clearly says that in order to attain glory, one must embrace the cross.

At the same time, the disciples with the mother of the Zebedee in front, are thinking about the triumph, in brilliant careers, in great honours, in power …

Jesus, before the ignorant and stubborn position of his disciples, reminds us again what he has already told us repeatedly: “the first among you will be your servant”.

Remember and try to live one of the fundamental keys of his Kingdom: true power is service.

Offer yourself today for that work or that task that no one wants to do or that no one likes to do. Congratulations to all of you who are celebrating the feast of your Saint today:  St James
