Serving the Word: 23rd December

SATURDAY 23RD DECEMBER 2023

Luke 1, 57-66

“The time of Elizabeth’s childbirth was completed, and she gave birth to a son….. John is his name… the hand of the Lord was with him”.

Today’s Gospel recounts the birth of St. John the Baptist, the Forerunner of Jesus. John the Baptist was already sanctified in his mother’s womb before he was born. The Gospel tells us that he leapt for joy when in his mother’s womb he heard Mary’s greeting to Elizabeth. And from then on, his whole life was a continual leaping for joy before the Saviour. He proclaimed him, pointed him out, exalted him, and finally gave his life bearing witness to the truth he proclaimed.

You too leap for joy before the gratuitous salvation that you are continually receiving from God, and proclaim this salvation so that many may also leap for joy because of it.

We are approaching and we are already on the eve of Christmas. May your joy overflow in such a way that it spreads the Gospel to all those around you. Prepare yourself as best you can for the birth of the Saviour.

Good day to you.
