Serving the Word: 15th June

THURSDAY 15th JUNE 2023

Matthew 5, 20-26:

“If, when you are about to place your gift on the altar, you remember right there that your brother or sister has a complaint against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go first to be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then present your gift again.”

Jesus warns us today of a double worship that those of us who consider ourselves his followers may be engaging in:

– On the one hand, we try to behave well with him, we want to please him and so we pray, we participate in one or other solidarity campaign, we collaborate with one NGO or another, we belong to some brotherhood or sisterhood, we take part, if we can, in some procession, we go to Mass on Sundays and even also on weekdays, and we may also be in some catechesis group giving and receiving it.

– But, on the other hand, we are also giving worship to our envy and hatred, our laziness, our indifference, our injustices and favouritism, our materialism and sensuality, our lack of faith, hope and charity.

Let us work to ensure that we never separate the worship we give to God from the worship we give to our brother and sister.

The two are inseparable.

Good day to you.
