Serving the Word: 14th January

SATURDAY 14th JANUARY 2023

Mark 2, 13-17:

“As he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax counter, and he said to him, “FOLLOW ME.”

AND HE GOT UP AND FOLLOWED HIM … When Jesus was at table in his house, some of the scribes and Pharisees saw that he was eating with tax collectors and sinners, and said to the disciples, “He eats with tax collectors and sinners”. Jesus heard this and said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a physician, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners”.

The tax collectors were undesirable people, very much disliked and hated by the population.

But Jesus comes to them and even eats with them.

We see today how Jesus calls a tax collector and sinner to be his follower.

The salvation that Jesus brings is for everyone and most of all for those who need it most.

We can all sit very quietly behind our particular “tax counter”.

No matter how much you may be sitting behind your “tax counter”, have no doubt that Jesus always has his call and mercy in store for you.

Feel Christ’s salvation close to you and sit at his table this weekend: the table of the Eucharist.

Good day to you.
