Commentary for Sunday: XVIII Ordinary Time

August 2nd, 2020. 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 14, 13-21

Jesus and his disciples have withdrawn to a quiet place and there is a crowd looking for him, they follow him. They are “like sheep without a shepherd”. Jesus feels sorry for them, pities them, cares for them, heals their sick and asks his disciples to feed them. But it is he who will perform the miracle and satisfy the multitude.
Today there are many who are looking for someone to give some meaning to their lives. Some do not know where to look or who to trust. There are those who are hungry, but they don’t know what for. Jesus asks his disciples to feed the crowd. He also asks us, who are his disciples, to do the same: like him, to show pity, to heal the sick and to give them food, even if we think we can offer little. But to offer something of ourselves. To open ourselves to the needs of others. Only in this way will the miracle happen again.
When others see what our life, our Christian commitment, is like, they cannot help but feel called to share our path, the path marked out for us by the One who satisfies our hunger. Let us take a compassionate look around us and we will see a multitude that needs us. Then we will hear those words of the Lord: “Come, you blessed of my Father, for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink
