Commentary for Sunday: 7th May

John 14, 1-12:

Sunday, May 7th, 2023 (5 Easter   A)

“At that time Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let not your hearts tremble; believe in God, and believe also in me… I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also”.

I don’t like politics. But it seems to be “our daily bread”, and we have to live with it and with politicians. Globalisation and the media let us know instantly what is happening here, outside of here and far away from here. I don’t like politics because it has become an instrument at the service of politicians, their personal interests or those of their party, whatever their party. They forget that they were elected to serve others by seeking justice, peace and the common good for all equally. They leave many dissatisfied, and they feel let down.

Once again God comes to meet us. He invites us to turn to the one who does not disappoint, the one who reminds us again: “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”.

He does not promise, he acts. He does not indicate, he goes ahead. We do not have to wait to reach the goal, but it is by walking this way (love one another) that the full meaning of our life is achieved. The one who walks this path finds their own truth, lives happily, has love in their life.

No politician is able to give themselves in the way that Jesus did. It is his word, his life, his death and resurrection that are convincing. The one who follows this path will never be disappointed. That is why there is no need to be afraid, no need to doubt.
