Commentary for Sunday: 4th June

John 3, 16-18:

Sunday, June 4th, 2023  (Most Holy Trinity)

“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

There are many people who say they are atheists or agnostics. And if they give any explanation we can guess that it is because they have been given an image of God that does not correspond to that of the gospel. The God of theoretical definitions, made from a human mentality. The God of theology and philosophy, who cannot go beyond what reasoning allows. God is a mystery, and as such, unreachable by reason. But not for the heart.

To understand what love is, you have to be in love. And those who live in love are full of feelings and live in happiness. Others notice it, they don’t need explanations.

The mystery of God is a mystery of love. He loves us because we are his children and he makes himself present in our lives. He is not far away, nor is he the righteous personage that some have presented him as. He becomes one like us and gives us a lesson of life in the person of his Son Jesus, and he gives us his Spirit to be with us always so that we may be able to love as he loves us.

The one who “feels” God in their life does not need definitions, and the one who lives it transmits an image of peace, love and forgiveness.
