Luke 13, 1-9:
Sunday, 20th March 2022 (3rd Lent C)
We all find it very easy to pass judgement on the various events that happen around us. Who among us has not expressed indignation at these “secular processions” that are being held in some cities? They give the impression that they want to attack very directly what we consider to be the principles of our faith. Are they trying to put us to the test? What is our response? Only rejection and condemnation?
This Sunday’s Gospel should be a wake-up call to our Christian commitment. It tells us the parable of a barren fig tree, which is given a new chance to bear fruit. God, the Father of mercy, continues to give us opportunities every year. Let us use the same yardstick for ourselves as we do for others. We easily condemn others, but we, ourselves, remain the same as ever. That is why Jesus tells us: “unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way. And St. Paul in his letter warns us: “If you think you are safe, beware, lest you fall”.
May God, who sent Moses to save his people from slavery in Egypt, send us the power of his Spirit to show us the way to conversion.
