Luke 9, 28b-36:
Sunday, 13th March 2022 (2nd T C C C).
With some distinct nuances from Matthew and Mark, Luke also tells us of the transfiguration of the Lord, which we read on this second Sunday of Lent. Jesus took Peter, James and John to a mountain to pray, and while Jesus was praying, he was transfigured before them, looking different. The apostles saw the glory of God. Peter intervenes, talks about staying and making three tents. A cloud forms and overshadows them, and from the cloud a voice is heard: “This is my Son, the Chosen One; listen to him.
But they must come down from the mountain; they must put their feet on the ground, and not forget what Jesus had said to them just before he went up the mountain: “We are going to Jerusalem, and there they will seize me, judge me and condemn me to death, but after three days I will rise again”. They do not understand what is happening at this time.
We often tend to forget that some things can only be won with great effort. Hence Jesus shows them that to get to glory it is necessary to go through the cross.
May our faith be kept alive with the hope of future glory. Like Abraham (1st reading), may we overcome the weariness and slumber of our faith by trusting in the word of the Lord. In this way, (as St. Paul says in the 2nd reading), “the Lord will transform our lowly condition according to the model of his glorious condition”.
