Commentary for Sunday: 3rd January

John 1, 1-18:

SUNDAY 3 JANUARY 2021 (2ND T N B.)

We continue in the Christmas season, and have celebrated important events: Christmas, Holy Family, First of January day of Holy Mary Mother of God. Surely these have been days of good resolutions, of approaching loved ones, as far as possible, of celebration and joy.

In this atmosphere, even at Christmas time, the Word of God this Sunday invites us to reflect on what we are living. The first reading, taken from the book of Ecclesiasticus, praises Wisdom: the Wisdom of God has come down from the heights and has made her home among His people: “I have taken root among a glorious people, in the portion of the Lord”. Words very similar to those that St. John the Evangelist tells us in the prologue of his Gospel: “the Word was with God, the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. God the Father sends us his Word, his Son, who takes on a body like ours in Jesus of Nazareth. It is the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament. It is the realization of God’s saving plan for us.

It also reminds us of the Gospel that “he came to his own, but they did not receive him. There are those who do not accept that in that humble family of Nazareth the Wisdom of God is becoming a reality. “But to those who received it, it gives power to become children of God.

How have I lived these days? What effect has the birth of the Saviour had on me? Am I aware that He continues to be born in my environment and to be present in my life?

Like St. Paul, in the second reading, let us thank God for having chosen us to be His children, and let us ask Him to grant us to know better the grace received.
