Commentary for Sunday: II of Lent

March 8th, 2020. 2nd of Lent. Mt 17, 1-9

How difficult it often is for us Christians to be faithful to the commitment of our faith. We have the impression that God does not listen to us, that our prayer has no answer, that the horizon is too dark for us.
We need a signal, a sign, something to lean on in order to continue without losing heart. Jesus himself asked his Father: “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me”, referring to his imminent death. And he was heard, though not as he asked, but with the resurrection, and passing first through death. To show us that the path of this life is very hard, but that God does not forget us and that he gives an answer to our faith and hope.
When Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James and John, he was showing them (and us) that to reach this end, we had to walk this road first.
Our faith has to be confident in the end that God promises us, and that it has to be strengthened with the signs that God gives us every day and that we have to discover.
