MONDAY 12th DECEMBER 2022
Matthew 21, 23-27:
“By what authority are you doing this? Who gave you such authority?”.
Jesus has just expelled merchants from the temple and has just told the Pharisees that they have turned the temple of God into a den of robbers.
This is a source of pain to both sides and the Pharisees ask Jesus by what authority he is acting in this way.
They do not question why Jesus has addressed this accusation to them. Their concern is not to lose their power, to secure their own image. Because their authority is based on power, on force, on oppression and coercion.
They do not understand that Jesus’ authority is based on honesty, on always seeking truth and integrity, on selfless and generous service, on unconditional love for each person, on a deep relationship with the Father.
On which model would you like to base your authority: on the Pharisee model or on the model of Jesus?
