From the Word: “Artistic Claret” at CIC

The International School Library Month (MIBE) created countless opportunities for the School Library of Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos (CIC) to challenge the students through multiple challenges proposed and developed in collaboration and cooperation with the teachers and students of the different grades of the school. Thus, an activity was born, very much in line with the pastoral motto that is still in force this year, ‘From the Word’.

“Artistic Claret”, under the direction of the teacher Ana Gonçalves, with the 10th year Graphic Arts class, invited the students to use old or disused books to make artistic interventions with the image of Saint Anthony Mary Claret, also coinciding with the commemorations in his honour, patron saint of the school, which took place on the 24th of October.

The activity was inspired by a phrase of Fr Claret, messenger of the written word, who once said: “If people do not have good books, they will read bad ones. Books are the food of the soul, and just as the body is nourished by healthy food and harmed by poisonous food, so it is with reading and the soul”.

Today, 150 years later, the CIC family has no doubt that Claret would have made his own the motto launched by the MIBE “The School Library: my favourite place to Create and Imagine”, combining it with the vision and mission defined for the education of the Claretian Schools.
