More than 400 people gathered at Buckden Towers on Monday, 31 August, for a very special Claretian Family Day, celebrating 70 years since the arrival of the Claretian Missionaries at this historic site in 1956.
Coaches brought parishioners from the Claretian communities in Leyton, Barking, and Hayes, who were joined by friends travelling from across the country to share the day with residents from Buckden and the surrounding area.
Throughout the afternoon, there was plenty to enjoy and share: a barbecue, guided tours of the historic towers provided by the Friends of Buckden Towers association, and video screenings looking back at the journey of the Claretians here over the past seven decades. In addition, music and entertainment led by the local Filipino community added a wonderfully joyful and festive touch to the atmosphere.
At the heart of the day was an outdoor Mass celebrated in Queen Katherine’s Knot Garden. The celebration was attended by Fr Manuel Ogalla, CMF, a member of the Provincial Council of the Province of Fátima, joined by fellow Claretian brothers and the hundreds gathered for the anniversary.
The weather was good for most of the day, although a few passing showers kept everyone on their toes!
Above all, this Family Day was about people: an opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new ones, share memories, and experience the richness of the wider Claretian family brought together. Great food, wonderful company, prayer, music, and laughter made this a lovely celebration of 70 years of Claretian life and mission at Buckden Towers — and of a community that continues to grow day by day.
