Luke 14, 12-14
“When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind; blessed are you, for they cannot repay you; they will repay you when the virtuous rise again”.
There is a theology that could be called “the theology of the broom, the apron and the towel”. It is the theology which today’s Gospel invites us to live. It is simply the theology of surrender and service.
Today’s gospel asks us to be with those with whom Jesus was. And Jesus was with those “without”: without papers, without food, without business, without health, without a roof, without a family….
A woman who knew how to bring this Gospel to life was Mother Mary Most Pure of the Cross, Little Sister of the Cross. She knew how to serve the most needy with a profound dedication and humility. She spent her life with her towel wrapped around her waist, her apron on and her broom in her hands.
With the broom she not only knew how to sweep the floor but also how to sweep the needs of the people who continually came to her and her sisters.
Put on a good clean apron today and pick up a good broom. And set about tending to and sweeping up any needs you find around you. Like Jesus, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind to your banquet. Blessed are you because they cannot pay you. You will be repaid when the righteous are raised.
