Serving the Word: 24th February

FRIDAY 24th FEBRUARY 2023

Matthew 9, 14-15:

“Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”.

The disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees practised a religion of fasting and thus wanted to honour God with sacrifice.

Jesus does not want us to base our faith on the practice of rules that may be empty, but on the practice of the joy that living the Gospel gives us.

Fasting is always good. But fasting, above all, from whatever takes away from us and from others the true joy of being children of God and brothers and sisters to one another.

During this Lent, as we said on Ash Wednesday, we will certainly fast from certain foods, but above all we will fast from that which prevents us from a true union with God and a true union and relationship with our fellow human beings.

Good day to you.
