Commentary for Sunday: 5th September

Mark 7, 31-37:

Sunday, 5th September 2021 (23RD T O B)

Faced with the situation of the world and all the evils that afflict it, both natural and human (pandemics, floods, hurricanes, Taliban…), there are people who wonder how God can “allow” such misfortunes to happen. How can these be reconciled with the goodness and omnipotence of God? Is God not a Saviour?

This Sunday’s readings may give us some clues. In the face of the dramatic situation of the people of Israel, Isaiah assures us of God’s nearness and intervention. He announced a time that filled the people with hope. His word came true. In the Gospel, Jesus heals a deaf-mute. His words and actions are for us a sign of better times.

Today God continues to be faithful to his plan of salvation, in spite of the evils that man continues to bring into the world. In Jesus the healing and saving power of God was made present. Before he died he gave his followers a task. In it must be the response of God’s action to the evils of the world. The Christian cannot remain indifferent in the face of so much suffering. God still needs us to carry out his saving plan. Am I willing to collaborate?
