Serving the Word: 13th March

SATURDAY 13th MARCH 2021

Luke 18, 9-14:

“The Pharisee, standing upright, prayed thus to himself, O God, I thank thee, for I am not like the rest: thieves, unjust, adulterers; nor like that publican… The tax collector, on the other hand, only beat his breast, saying: O God, have mercy on me a sinner”.

We all have a dose of Pharisee and a dose of publican in us.

The Pharisee in me leads me to believe that I am superior to others, to pride, to despise others, to think that I can save myself by my own strength and by the merit of my own works.

Our feeling of being a publican leads me to humility, to recognise myself as a sinner and not to trust in my own strength.

The Pharisee’s attitude will always be wrong and the publican’s attitude will not always be right.

It is good to recognise what we are, but at the same time to recognise that we are children of God and that we are precious and dear to Him.

Our very weaknesses should lead us to joy and optimism.

I am a child of God and my Father loves me and also loves my weakness with infinite mercy.

And also with infinite mercy he forgives my sin.

Good day.
